8th June, Ship Aground - Lauritzen Bulker, run aground on the reef at Nobbys Beach, Newcastle. (Photo: Matthew Packer)
If you did, could you please come down to Nobby’s Beach in Newcastle and pick it up. We’re a little concerned about the litter situation around here - particularly the reports of 700 tonnes of heavy fuel and another 34 tonnes of diesel.
The storm came in overnight and has pounded the coastline of Newcastle. In addition to the ship above another two are within one nautical mile of the coast. Most others that had been anchored at sea overnight shifted further offshore to try and prevent this from happening to them.
Hopefully this one will refloat out to sea.

Update
For those of you who missed it, Newcastle + the Hunter region have been buffeted by what some are claiming as the worst storms in over a decade (see SMH, Google or even my comment).
I couldn’t get home immediately tonight due to flooding in Newcastle, so instead I went to my second cousin’s place (and got a beautiful dinner out of it - ta!).
On the way home I was greeted with one of the most eerie surrounds - cars dumped with hazard lights like in some sort of zombie or natural disaster movie.
After I got home I went out with my flatmate, Ben, and a friend of his to check out the little boat that could (beach itself like a whale).

Update
New shot from monday night after driving up from Sydney.
Pasha Bulker @ Nobby’s Beach, Newcastle - 11th June, 2007

34 tonnes of diesel? Quick - take your tractor down and refuel!
A truck meets a train, a ship on the beach wanting to be joined by two others… What is happening down there????
Pretty insane. Must’ve been a big storm! How did it surprise everyone? Surely the Meteorologists would’ve have given some storm warning?
Hypocrite!!!
That was directed at you JOEL!
Your Monday night update shot looks awesome! Good timing (and patience).
I guess people are back on the ship, and it ‘might’ do something soon…..
heh - had more to do with luck there stephen. Just happened to be the second shot there and the wave smashed into the side of the boat.
The salvage tugs are meant to be here, but they’ve got to work out how to lift it out of the sand first. Suggestions include those high pressure floats like were seen in the building in Venice in the latest James Bond film…
Great photo mate
Attention Attention, global shipping, did you lose a boat?? meeeeeeeeeew….
If so, within 27.435 hours of reading this notice you are required to fill in Form 10456.7(c)(ix), stating (a) the boat name (b) serial number (c) number of muscular sailors aboard and (d) what colour underpants you are wearing to be submitted for consideration by the Dept. of Bureaucracy, Red Tape and Militant Naysaying. Your request will be processed when we are not on a flexi day, and will most likely be denied.
