Schooner Rant: NSW Schools Go Back, Sydney Gridlock Returns

Sydney’s traffic on a better day. Today it was at the mercy of the chauffeured generation of students (Photo: north approach to Sydney harbour bridge by Lynn Smith - Creative Commons License)

After almost two months of summer house sitting friends places in Dee Why and then Haberfield I am now back at home (possibly temporarily - I’m trying to find a place to move out to at the moment). This week was what I really didn’t want. Not only did I head back home on Monday, the Australia Day public holiday, and thus start a new week commuting once more from North Narrabeen but I also was lucky enough to have this same week coincide with the start of school for New South Wales.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club rocking the Metro Theatre in Sydney

To start the year off I headed into the city after my first day back at work (and going back home to get changed and grab my camera gear) was Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Thankfully my name was on the door list this time (unlike last time I shot there the month before) and there wasn’t a problem getting in. What the problem was was that there was no photographers pit - the first time I’d seen such a thing at the Metro which is usually pretty good with this sort of thing. The crowd was one of the least accommodating of the two photographers there that night (myself and another girl shooting for a magazine). Despite only having three songs I managed to get a few decent shots - but was no where near where I wanted to be. To make up for it the set was a pretty decent one, so I returned home feeling ok about the night in the end. Support was from the Black Ryder

The Enmore’s information board - definitely the coolest around!

My final gig for 2007, and what a year it’s been (if you’re bored I’ve split my review of 2007 into parts I and II for a review with photography). Given that Gonzáles is currently on high rotation on my iPod (all albums, not just the recent one), and my immediate fondness upon getting onto the viral spread of advertising for Sony’s Bravia (before it was released as the advertising campaign for the LCD television series) I was ecstatic when I picked up this gig - even if most people I talked to about him had no idea who he was (for the record, my mum’s more up to date than all those who weren’t aware of who this Swedish singer-songwriter is). Support was from the talented soloist Emily Barker.

As an added bonus I finally met Lucky (aka Lakshal Perera) at this gig - with me shooting for FasterLouder and him picking up the gig for The Dwarf. A great guy and was definitely good to have someone there to hang out with after our three songs were finished for both of the artists. Definitely was the best gig to round out a massive 2007 and entry to the contributory group of photographers that cover Sydney and Newcastle’s live music scene - each and every weekend.

Anyhow, more shots after the break or at the full flickr set.

The newly wed Sarah and Stuart Auld

This would end up being a test for me - not only was I expected to bring the camera, but I was also the Best Man for my closest mate Stu. Held at the Mason’s Laurelbank Cottage at Willoughby the gents of the ceremony were in kilts (a rather amusing move from Stuart who, while having some Scottish blood in him no doubt, isn’t really exceedingly Scottish with the exception perhaps of a fondness for Scotch Whiskey). The day was rather fun, although it was a bit of an odd feeling wandering around in a formal outfit but feeling more like wearing just a towel on the bottom half of your body (not to mention the classic lace up shoes and long socks).

As Nick was in the New York and unable to make an appearance in person, I managed to cajole him into recording a high quality (technically, see the youtube video to understand). Definitely helped break the ice for my speech - so many thanks mate!

Blackalicious at the Forum in Sydney

Got a late call up from Angus at InTheMix.com.au to shoot this gig. Was a lot of fun - was there with fellow Sydney shooter Anthony Yong, and also Perth photographer Anthony T came along to spectate, so was nice to meet him in person. The night was pretty fun, and well worth attending. QBert’s an absolute king of the decks, People Under The Stairs were pretty fun - and Blackalicious weren’t too bad either.
